Jean Nouvel and the art of the floor

Jean Nouvel is one of the most consistently surprising architects of the last half century. The Institut du Monde Arabe in Paris, the Torre Agbar in Barcelona, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, One New Change in London — each project finds him approaching the brief from an angle nobody anticipated, using light, transparency, geometry and material in ways that simultaneously feel inevitable and genuinely new.

In 2015 Bolon — the Swedish woven vinyl flooring innovator — invited Nouvel to design a collection. The result is six floor designs, each numbered rather than named, each carrying the unmistakable mark of an architect who thinks about space, surface and perception with unusual rigour.

It is one of the most credible designer-manufacturer collaborations in the flooring world, and one of the least known. The entire collection is available at Fenston Carter.

The Bolon medium

Bolon woven vinyl is not carpet and it is not conventional LVT. It is a woven textile structure — the same principles as fabric weaving, applied to vinyl yarn — that produces a floor surface with the visual warmth and acoustic properties of carpet and the durability and cleanability of hard flooring. Bolon is made in Sweden from recycled materials, and the woven structure gives each design a subtle three-dimensional quality that flat-print vinyl cannot replicate.

The medium was important to Nouvel's approach. The woven structure creates a surface that reads differently at different scales and in different light conditions — close up, the individual yarns and their intersections are visible; from a distance, the design resolves into pattern and tone. This play between micro and macro, between material reality and visual impression, is a preoccupation that runs through Nouvel's architectural work.

The six designs

The collection runs from No. 01 to No. 06, each a distinct geometric composition. The approach is rigorous rather than decorative: these are not patterns in the conventional flooring sense — repeating motifs applied to a ground — but spatial compositions in which the relationship between line, interval and tone is precisely controlled.

The palette throughout is restrained. Nouvel works in dark greys, warm neutrals, and controlled contrasts rather than in colour. The effect is of a floor that is clearly designed without drawing attention to itself, which is perhaps the hardest thing to achieve in interior design.

The numbered designation is itself a considered choice. Names carry associations; numbers carry none. Each design is allowed to be exactly what it is without the freight of a label telling the viewer how to read it.

Where it works

Bolon by Jean Nouvel sits at the premium end of the commercial flooring market and is suited to interiors where the floor is expected to carry design weight. Boutique hotel lobbies, gallery spaces, high-specification corporate reception areas, private members clubs, design studios and luxury retail environments are the natural habitat.

The acoustic properties of woven vinyl — which reduces impact noise and absorbs some airborne sound — make it particularly effective in open-plan spaces where noise management is as important as aesthetics. For hospitality environments where the floor takes heavy traffic but must still look considered at the end of a busy evening, the durability of Bolon's woven vinyl construction is equally important.

Because the collection is not widely known or widely specified, it also offers something that the dominant LVT brands cannot: genuine rarity. A floor that your client's competitors are extremely unlikely to have.

Sustainability

All Bolon flooring is manufactured in Sweden from recycled yarn, and the company holds B Corp certification — a standard that assesses social and environmental performance across the entire business rather than just individual products.
